People who experience musical hallucinations often describe the sensation as being like “a radio station playing inside their head.” The experience can be very distressing for some people and can cause feelings of confusion and fear. They may also arise spontaneously in some individuals. Musical hallucinations can be triggered by a variety of factors, including hearing loss, overexposure to loud noise, and brain damage or disease. Though musical hallucination is not as common as other forms such as those that involve animal and nature noises, these types of experiences do occur. Musical hallucinations are a special type of auditory hallucination where people can hear entire melodies or songs. When someone says they’re hearing sounds, what comes to mind? Perhaps music. They can range from single words to entire conversations and can be perceived as coming from either inside or outside of one’s own head. AVHs involve hearing voices that are not actually present in the physical environment. Auditory Verbal HallucinationsĪuditory verbal hallucinations (AVH) are a common symptom experienced by individuals with mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. There are two types of auditory hallucinations – auditory verbal hallucinations and hearing sounds/noises. Are There Different Types Of Auditory Hallucinations? It is not uncommon for those afflicted by psychiatric disorders to experience them more regularly than others. Whether they appear frequently or sporadically, auditory hallucinations are typically a symptom associated with mental health issues. Individuals will report hearing voices or other types of sounds, like music, and the sounds may seem as though they are coming from their ears, body, mind, or surroundings. Shorter versions of select songs will be played on various radio stations across B.C. The release of this album coincides with Mental Health Week 2019. It doesn’t matter if listeners know or don’t know someone affected by this disease, it is important for them to understand what life can be like for people living with schizophrenia. Ultimately, BCSS hopes this project will reach a wide audience and help people learn about schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder that affects a lot of people differently and this album sheds light on all of those ways. Similar to auditory hallucinations experienced by people living with schizophrenia, when people listen to the songs they hear voices that can be frightening, confusing, encouraging or friendly. All musicians involved in this collaboration donated their music to help the world understand what they experience. With schizophrenia affecting 1 in 100 people worldwide, more than 360,000 Canadians are affected by the disease. Voice interjections overlap the songs creating “auditory hallucinations” that can be similar to the experiences of people who live with schizophrenia. Songs of Schizophrenia is an album released by British Columbia Schizophrenia Society (BCSS) in collaboration with 10 Canadian musicians that emulate what it can be like for those living with schizophrenia.
